A Guide to Start Preparing Your Vessel for the Water This Summer

by Rosa Wallace

Changing the batteries in your boat is just as important as the battery in your car. The difference is the batteries in your boat are designed differently. They are designed for marine environments and the needs of your boat. Therefore, it is important to choose the right ones when servicing your vessel. The following information will help you find the right batteries to prepare your boat:

Battery Weight

First, you want to consider when choosing a new battery for your boat is the AMP rating. Some boat batteries can be bulky and difficult to move in and out of your boat. Therefore, you want to try to find the lightest batteries to make maintenance and servicing your boat easier. Today, there are options like lithium-ion batteries. The lithium batteries will be easier to remove and reduce the overall weight of your boat, which can improve performance.

The Amp Rating

The amp (amperage) rating of the battery is also important. The battery has to supply enough amperes to be able to turn over the engine of your boat. There are other areas where you may need to consider the amp rating, such as the type of electrical system and the amps that equipment requires. You want to consider the different systems your batteries will be used for and the amperes needed for things like your engine or electrical systems.

Reserves Ratings for Equipment

Marine batteries also have a reserve rating. These are deep cycle systems, which means they are designed to hold more energy for marine needs. The reserve rating means how much energy a single battery can store. If you need more battery reserves, your boat may need to have more than one battery. They can be arranged in a string for a battery bank. Another option is to have one battery for the engine and mechanical systems and use others for other equipment on your boat.

Boat Battery Warranties

Lastly, you want to consider the warranty of the battery. Today, most batteries offer some sort of service warranty and guarantee for their lifetime. There are some types of batteries designed for marine applications that will last longer. If you want to have durable equipment for your boat, a sealed battery will last longer and often be more reliable.

Changing the batteries of your boat will help ensure you are ready for the summer boating season. Contact a marine boat supply service to get boat batteries and other equipment you need to prepare your vessel.

Exploring Engine Rebuild Parts and Practices

Hi everyone, my name is Lee Flounce. I am crazy about rebuilding engines in my spare time. The process of breaking down a combustion engine to find the damaged parts waiting inside definitely intrigues me. I carefully remove each part and place it on a piece of cardboard for a close inspection. Once the engine is broken into its individual components, I take some of the parts to the machine shop and clean others at home. I order all of the seals, gaskets and internal components in need of replacement and wait for my parts to return from the machine shop. Once I have everything I need, I rebuild the engine using the torque specs for all of the nuts and bolts. I would like to explore all of the parts and practices employed in this process through my website, as it differs slightly from engine to engine.
